Fall Activities for Seniors

The fall is a beautiful time of the year in Upstate New York. There are plenty of pumpkin patches to choose from, crisp fresh air, and leaves in some of the most amazing colors. Here are some autumn activities for seniors to look forward to, all near our retirement community at Broadview at Purchase College.

Fall Farmers Markets

Some of the best fall activities in New York are the amazing farmers markets that pop up every season. From fresh fruits and vegetables to farmstead cheeses and homemade baked goods, these markets give you access to amazing direct farm-to-table opportunities.

There are many farmers markets in the Purchase, NY area. In fact, there’s one right down the Street from broadview! Stop by Our New Way Garden, a fantastic non-profit organization, on Wednesdays from 10:30 AM to 5 PM for fresh produce and other local goods.

Another farmers market near Purchase College is the White Plains Farmers Market, located just a 10 minute drive away and open on Wednesdays from late April through the end of November. Enjoy a delicious lunch and bi-weekly performances by local musicians. Down To Earth Markets is also close by in Rye, NY. Check out their full list of vendors here!

Nature Walks & Hikes

There’s no better way to appreciate the season’s beautiful colors than walking through a forest full of red and orange leaves, which is why popular fun fall activities for seniors include hiking, biking, and strolling through New York State’s amazing parks and nature preserves.

Though just over the state border into Connecticut, the Greenwich Audubon Center is just a quick 10 minute drive from Broadview, and is a haven for nature-lovers, birdwatchers, and hikers alike. Protecting over 680-acres of land, the center is divided into seven sanctuaries, including the Wildflower Sanctuary and the Main Sanctuary, which includes 7 miles of trails through forests, fields, lakes and streams, and original New England homestead buildings. Enjoy the rejuvenating fresh air at this nature preserve, open daily from sunrise to sunset.

Golfing

Fall is the perfect time to tee up and hit a few rounds on the green. Luckily, there are plenty of golf courses just a quick drive from Broadview at Purchase College. Check out  The Golf Club of Purchase, Old Oaks Country Club, and Brae Burn Country Club, all within ten minutes of our community. Looking to step onto the court? You’ll also find plenty of opportunities for a game of tennis, pickleball, and more!

Pumpkin Patch, Apple Orchards, and Cider Tasting – All Just 30 Minutes Away

Looking for even more fresh produce? Just a quick drive from Broadview, you’ll find dozens of pumpkin patches, apple orchards, and cider tasting venues. Harvest Moon Farm and Orchard is a popular favorite among locals, with a special Fall Festival during weekends in September and October. Outhouse Orchards has apple and peach picking, as well as fresh hard cider and a farm-to-table stand with baked goods, homemade pies, and more. Salinger’s Orchard, which features a farmers market, kitchen, and bakery, is another amazing option. Though there is no “pick-your-own” because of the hilly terrain, they do offer a variety of stone fruits, including peaches, plums, and nectarines, as well as a wide selection of 26 varieties of apples!

Have Fun Inside

After spending time outside, you’ll probably want to warm up! Thankfully there are plenty of indoor fall activities for seniors. If you’re returning from the apple orchard or farm, enjoy baking and cooking with your newly bought produce – there’s nothing sweeter than a fresh apple pie! There’s also plenty of fun to be had indoors across the Broadview community and campus. Warm up with a cup of tea or coffee in the Learning Commons, catch a live show at Purchase College’s Performing Arts Center, or take a swim in Broadview’s heated indoor pool.
